Be a smart fresh grad ....
Some real experience that I have been through wanna share with those who just graduated from school and are going to enter the working jungle.
For example my pay is $1000 per month. After CPF deduction (20%) will left $800 for me to bring home. I started work on 25th of September (Mon). But my employer said will add into October's pay. So supposingly the total amount that I will get is $1000 + ($1000 / 21 working days X 5 days that I required to work) = $1238. But in the end I only received $1193.5. So there's $44.5 different. So I went to my employer and asked about the mistake of the calculation. And you know what, the way of their calculation is $1000 / 31 days x 6days = 1193.5.
Then I asked why divided the salary using 31 days instead of 21 working days? Then they said oh, is supposed to calculate like that, they include saturdays and sundays inside the calculation. But both days are not working days. So if I divided into 31 days, means I only worth $25.80 instead of 21 days which is $38.10. Then I was blurred liao. But I didn't agued back because I can't win my employer because my employer has more experience in this "jungle" than me. So I went home and check the Ministry of Manpower website to find out more. Then after that I found out that my employer's calculation is wrong. My employer shld not include the saturdays and sundays in the calculation, according to MOM, the calculation supposed to like this:
The basic rate of pay for one day is to be calculated according to the following formula:
12 x monthly basic rate of pay
52 x number of days on which the employee is required to work in a week.
That's why Letter of Appointment is very important to an employee because all the terms and conditions and agreement are all inside. And you will know how they calculate pro rate salary and can also confirm how many days of leaves you will get.
Without this letter means you don't have a protection for yourself and work for them blindly. ANd one more thing is pay slip, this one must get from them because usually (for design firm) they lazy to give pay slip and Letter of Appointment. So go and ask for it. Because pay slip will break down the salary into section so you will know how they calculate and also if they cheat, you can bring the pay slip to MOM, so they will help you to ask for money.
